'Men' repeat, Univision finale top Monday

Original programming lifted Spanish-language network Univision to the top of the broadcast ratings heap on Monday, edging out CBS' all-repeat lineup among young adults. ESPN was expected to dominate overall with its season finale of ''Monday Night Football.'' According to preliminary, affiliate-based national estimates from Nielsen, CBS led the Big Four from 8 to 10 p.m. with encores of comedies ''How I Met Your Mother'' (1.8/5 in 18-49, 5.9 million viewers overall), ''2 Broke Girls'' (1.9/5 in 18-49, 6.2 million viewers overall), ''Two and a Half Men'' (2.4/6 in 18-49, 8.1 million viewers overall) and ''Mike and Molly'' (2.1/5 in 18-49, 7.4 million viewers overall), with ''Men'' the night's top series in both 18-49 and total viewers. Closing things out was a repeat of ''Hawaii Five-0'' (1.6/4 in 18-49, 8.1 million viewers overall), which led its hour in key categories. Univision aired the two-hour finale of ''Fuerza del Destino'' (The Strength of Destiny), which averaged a 2.3/6 in 18-49 and 5.4 million viewers overall, followed by ''Don Francisco Presenta'' (1.5/4 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall), a newsmag that featured the cast of ''Destino.'' The net edged out CBS on the night in 18-49 and was easily Monday's top broadcaster in persons 12-34 (1.9/6). Ratings for NBC could come down in the nationals due to a preemption in New Orleans for Saints football, but the net hung in there from 8 to 10 p.m. with gameshow ''Who's Still Standing'' (1.7/5 in 18-49, 6.9 million viewers overall) and a repeat of ''Fear Factor'' (1.6/4 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall). It remained slow going, though, for 10 p.m. newsmag ''Rock Center with Brian Williams'' (0.9/2 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall). ABC had a quiet night with repeats of ''Rudolph's Shiny New Year'' (0.9/3 in 18-49, 3.3 million viewers overall) and ''Castle'' (0.9/2 in 18-49, 4.4 million viewers overall) sandwiched between the finale of feel-good gameshow ''You Deserve It'' (1.0/3 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall). The net's Atlanta station aired the Falcons' game against the Saints, so ABC's meager numbers on the night could come in even lower in the nationals. Fox aired repeats of ''House'' at both 8 (0.9/2 in 18-49, 3.0 million viewers overall) and 9 (0.8/2 in 18-49, 2.8 million viewers overall), and CW went with a repeat of theatrical ''The Education of Charlie Banks'' (0.3/1 in 18-49, 0.7 million viewers overall). Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Univision, 2.0/5; CBS, 1.9/5; NBC, 1.4/4; ABC, 0.9/2; Fox, 0.8/2; CW, 0.3/1. In total viewers: CBS, 6.6 million; NBC, 5.0 million; Univision, 4.8 million; ABC, 3.8 million; Fox, 2.9 million; CW, 0.7 million. Contact Rick Kissell at rick.kissell@variety.com

'Casa De Mi Padre' Trailer: Will Ferrell Habla Espanol

Back in April, the full trailer for 'Casa De Mi Padre' -- better known as that bananas comedy where Will Ferrell speaks Spanish -- unofficially snuck online and revealed a film that was seemingly a Funny or Die video stretched to feature length. The first ("first") teaser trailer doesn't do much more to make 'Casa De Mi Padre' look very theatrical, but -- then again -- it doesn't really have to do anything. To wit: if you find the idea of Will Ferrell speaking Spanish for an entire film HI-larious, then this will make you laugh. Or, reír. Mira el trailer por delante. Watch in HD over at Apple. Pretty Little Liars, Charlie Sheen Top Twitter's Hot Topics in 2011

Light of Mine

A Resonance Prods. presentation. Produced by Jill Remensnyder, Brett Eichenberger. Executive producer, Josh Wallace. Directed, edited by Brett Eichenberger. Screenplay, Jill Remensnyder. With: Ji Tanzer, Rebecca Sanborn, Justin King, Lanie Hoyo.A photographer who's going blind makes one final trip with his loving wife through Yellowstone National Park in "Light of Mine," which is as replete with good intentions as it is with awkward storytelling choices. A typical case of regional moviemaking (in this case, the Central Northwest of Portland-based director Brett Eichenberger) that prizes good-hearted characters over filmmaking sophistication, the pic will draw interest in North American indie fests looking for an item with spectacular landscapes. Pro shutterbug Owen (Ji Tanzer) learns from his doctor that he has a swollen retina that will soon cause total blindness in both eyes. Owen's musician wife, Laura (Rebecca Sanborn, a jazz musician who regularly gigs with Tanzer), urges them to take the trip of a lifetime, which translates as a trek from Oregon to the most tourist-friendly sections of Yellowstone. Staged scenes tend toward wooden dialogue and perfs, while spontaneously captured moments (such as encounters with the park's imposing wildlife) spark brief moments of interest.Camera (color, 16mm-to-DV), Patrick Neary, Michael Ferry; music, John Askew, Rebecca Sanborn; production designer, Becky Wilberding. Smug New Yorker Critic In some way Handles to Compel Sympathy For Scott Rudin

This type of silly public skirmish appears a tad too easy to just naturally occur per week once the Artist and War Equine are ruling honours chatter, but in either case, stroppy megaproducer Scott Rudin is furious using the NYer for breaking an evaluation embargo around the Girl Using the Dragon Tattoo. Who are able to blame him, especially since critic David Denby — together with the relaxation from the people from the NY Film Experts Circle who saw the film before voting a week ago — signed a contract assenting to keep his review until 12 ,. 13 in the earliest? Or more essential real question is: Why wouldn't you care? I'm able to think about a couple of reasons, chief included in this being that Denby’s excuse for breaking his word is amusing. The Playlist got a your hands on an e-mail exchange between Rudin and Denby, which really should be read to become thought — particularly this passage from Denby (who, incidentally, gave the film a rave): The machine is destructive: Grown-ups are overlooked for much of the season, cast out like cut down employees, after which given eight good movies all at one time within the last five days of the season. The sunday paper such as the NYer needs to cope as well as it may having a nutty release schedule. It wasn't my intention to interrupt the embargo, and that i never might have tried it with an adverse review. [T]he early [NYFCC] election forced the first screening of Dragon Tattoo. Therefore we were built with a dilemma: What to set up playboy on December 5? Definitely not We Bought the Zoo, or whatever it’s known as. As we held everything serious, we'd be being released on Christmas-season movies until mid-The month of january. We needed to go serious within the magazine. So unwillingly, we went early with Dragon, that we known as “mesmerizing.” I am sorry for that breach from the embargo. It won’t happen again. But it was a unique situation triggered by year-finish madness. Regardless, congratulations for creating one other good movie. I anticipate the Daldry. Best, David Denby “Best,” indeed! I i never thought it may be done, but at least — and again presuming this isn’t all some manufactured debate (that the NYer in the past could be above, but at this time who fucking knows) — I really feel pangs of sympathy for Scott Rudin. A couple of ideas for that six or seven individuals who cared enough to see this far: 1. Evaluating sophisticated adult filmgoers who face a prestige glut in December to “downsized employees” is just one of Denby’s more hobbled (as well as breathtakingly tasteless) metaphors of the season — and this can be a guy who regarded as a movie last winter “like a butterfly half from its cocoon, emerging with lots of fond looks to the protective walls.” Champion, I suppose! 2. “A magazine such as the NYer needs to cope as well as it may having a nutty release schedule,” Denby creates. Memo to Denby: Everybody needs to deal with this schedule — experts, editors, galleries, theater proprietors… It’s challenging that needs strategy and options. That’s what professionals do, not pledge one factor and alter direction to match themselves. I've got a feeling that towards the extent they can care, visitors will understand. However, you let me know, visitors. 3. Furthermore, for how long does “a magazine such as the NYer” sign NDAs barring it from covering something? I’d like to begin to see the Whitened House try by using Seymour Hersh. 4. “What to set up playboy on December 5? Definitely not We Bought the Zoo, or whatever it’s known as.” LOLOL. 5. For Christ’s sake, people, stop calling films “the Daldry” or “the Fincher” or whatever. It’s this kind of apparent, pretentious affectation — as an annoying auteurist equal to being addressed as “bro” — and everybody who practices it knows it. The title from the film is Very Noisy and extremely Close only use it. In either case, there won't be any “the Daldry” for Denby, a minimum of if Rudin upholds their own vow, also acquired through the Playlist: I possibly could not in good conscience invite you to view another movie of mine again, Daldry or else. I'm able to’t ignore this, and that i expect that you simply wouldn’t either when the situation were corrected. I’m not really thinking about the reason why you did this with the exception that you probably did — and also you must a minimum of own that, purely and just, you broke your word to us which that's a deeply lousy and immoral factor to possess done. … You'll now cause The many other reviews to operate per month prior to the discharge of the film, which is really a deeply destructive factor to possess done due to the fact you’re disdainful of We Purchased a Zoo. Why am I designed to worry about that??? For that record, this isn't the crisis that Rudin claims it's — there will likely not be considered a torrent of other reviews per month before Dragon Tattoo, and even when there have been, “deeply destructive” suggests strong dislike overall — which, as word will get around, apparently couldn’t be further from a realistic look at many testers along with other associates’ perspectives. Nonetheless, Denby’s smug entitlement is of the rare variety that outsizes even Rudin’s own. Pretty, I must say. And regardless, around we hate to help you “downsized employees” available wait, Movieline will wait to write its review nearer to the discharge from the film. Scott Turow's Innocent

Bill Pullman is an appellate judge who has a tense relationship with his wife and an affair with a legal clerk in Scott Turows Innocent. Filmed in British Columbia by Mike Robe Prods. Executive producers, Frank von Zerneck, Mike Robe; producer, Lisa Richardson; co-producer, Laurence Ducceschi; writer-director, Robe, based on the novel by Scott Turow.Rusty Sabich - Bill Pullman Barbara Sabich - Marcia Gay Harden Sandy Stern - Alfred Molina Tommy Molto - Richard Schiff Nat Sabich - Callard Harris Anna Vostic - Mariana Klaveno Jimmy Brand - Tahmoh PenikettIt doesn't take a criminal mastermind to know that when establishing a TV mystery franchise, you need to call upon pros like Scott Turow and Mary Higgins-Clark. They and other bestselling crime writers have been tapped to inaugurate TNT's umbrella "Mystery Movie" banner, kicking off the six-film event with Turow's "Innocent," a sequel to the popular book turned feature "Presumed Innocent." While lacking the goods to impress fans of the novel or even of the 1990 Alan Pakula film, it should satisfy the average armchair sleuth. In their late '70s heyday, mystery wheel titles like "McMillan and Wife," "Columbo" and "McCloud" were a staple. Granted, crime dramas have never gone out of style, but these days, it's more about the procedure and minutiae of detective work or the gross-out factor of forensic science. At first glance the Turow adaptation offers a tantalizing plot, picking up 20 years after the whodunit shocker ending of "Presumed Innocent," as the recriminations of past events have caught up with everyone involved. Rusty (Bill Pullman, stepping into Harrison Ford's role) is an appellate judge balancing a tense and guilt-ridden relationship with his emotionally charged wife Barbara (Marcia Gay Harden). The two put on a decent face for their law grad son Nat (Callard Harris), but Rusty soon strays with his young promising law clerk, Anna ("True Blood's" Mariana Klaveno). When Barbara dies in her sleep, an apparent death by natural causes case dredges up old grudges and new enemies. A legal thriller in the sense that it ensconces viewers in the tight-knit, nepotistic circle of lawyers, clerks and judges, the new movie has all of the left-over baggage of "Presumed Innocent" but none of the courtroom finesse and tense whodunit qualities. What did stop her will be a ditch, where cops found her early 'life was imple' with different police report acquired with the Smoking Gun. Ornelas blamed everything on her behalf account boyfriend for bailing around the movie date. So these movies do drive you to definitely certainly drink. Ornelas was released after posting $300 bail. She was "very upset along with her boyfriend because she did not start to see the movie 'Twilight' such as these were suppose [sic] to," the report reads. Because the 'Twilight' movies do advocate abstinence, they apparently also needed to include a "don't drive after drinkingInch message. 'Hugo' Star Asa Butterfield Talks 'Ender's Game'

Some of last week's biggest news came on Friday (Nov 18), when Deadline reported that "Hugo" star Asa Butterfield was offered the lead role in Gavin Hood's "Ender's Game" adaptation. When MTV News sat down with Butterfield while he was promoting "Hugo," the young actor was tight-lipped on where his status with the project stood, simply stating that he could "possibly" star in the long-anticipated sci-fi film. Butterfield would admit to reading both the book and the script by Hood and "Star Trek" collaborators Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. "I have read the book. I love the book. It's just a great book. I've read the script as well," Butterfield said. According to Butterfield, Orson Scott Card's iconic novel about a boy genius cast into a galactic war is right up his alley. "The book's incredible. It's late 1900s. It's sci-fi. I love all that retro stuff," he said. There have been several attempts made by several directors to get the book onto the screen, and the potential casting of Butterfield represents new ground being broken in terms of progress on the film. And even though the novel's fervid fanbase holds high hopes for an adaptation, if it ever happens, Butterfield said he feels up to the task. "Everything would be cool about playing a role like that," he said. "I reckon I could hack it." Butterfield remained mostly quiet about the project throughout the interview, but said hypothetically, if he were to star in the film, it would be his next project. Do you think Asa Butterfield would make a good Ender? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

Way to Heaven

An Odyssey Theater Ensemble presentation of a play in two acts by Juan Mayorga, translated by David Johnston. Directed by Ron Sossi. Sets, Frederica Nascimento; costumes, Audrey Eisner; lighting, Kathi O'Donohue; sound, John Thompson; videography, Marlon Duarte. Opened Oct. 1, 2011. Reviewed Nov. 18. Runs through Dec. 18. Running time: 110 MIN.Commandant Norbert - Weisser Gershom Gottfried - Bruce Katzman With: Hannah Cowley, Nicolas Francis, Inessa Guenther, Dylan La Rocque, Michael McGee, Joshua Moore, Nina Sallinen, David Valdes, Talyan Wright.Juan Mayorga's Holocaust-themed "Way to Heaven" is a bold but failed employment of metatheatrical means to unearth a parcel of historical truth. It's one thing to characterize the appalling deception at Theresienstadt concentration camp as the ultimate role-playing theatrical spectacle. It's quite another to emphasize the performance metaphor to the exclusion of everything else. In the process, the victims' horror - genuine suffering, not figurative - is trivialized. For those with short memories, in 1944 the Nazis famously created a Potemkin village at Theresienstadt in order to mislead Red Cross inspectors about the Jews' treatment in captivity. Inmates were tidied and dressed up, given jobs and leisure activities, treated to good, plentiful food and told to smile, smile, smile. (To give the impression of spacious barracks, excess camp population was shipped off to Auschwitz.) Film footage to this day serves the noxious purposes of Holocaust deniers. As Mayorga tells it, the commandant (Norbert Weisser) is a demented impresario who has created not just types, but individualized roles with full pages of dialogue to support them. He obsesses like Max Reinhardt with proper casting and line readings, tapping Gottfriend (Bruce Katzman), the mayor of the inmate population, as reluctant stage manager/facilitator. "Way to Heaven" downplays or ignores the situation's specifics, which you'd think would be dramatically fertile enough, in favor of the unenlightening, self-conscious theatrical conceit. We never believe this officer is worried about making just the right impression on the observers, or the consequences if his superiors decide he's bungled it. He just preens and struts, chortling over this staging coup or fretting about that gesture's authenticity. If the mayor is trying to tread a dreaded line between cooperation and contriving the best deal for his people, it's all in his head, for the portrayal is sheer numbness. Before the show, audiences are invited to (in essence) assume the Red Cross's function by exploring the exhibited prison trappings, faithfully re-created by designer Frederica Nascimento. But when the museum labels are removed, implying we're about to see the truth behind the artifice, the production merely shifts to another level of artifice. Mayorga has helmer Ron Sossi deploy the inmates as sleepwalking puppets, brainwashed to review their lines over and over until they get the business right. Following the curtain call come two minutes of the actual propaganda movies, not the wisest choice for an enterprise as abstracted as this one. The heartbreaking images of captives playing out their assigned parts, at once grinning and desperate, merely emphasize the irrelevance of Mayorga's windy duality-of-theater guff to the genuinely mournful legacy of Theresienstadt. 'The Iron Lady' Star Meryl Streep is Under-Appreciated... Yeah, You Heard Me Right! (Analysis)

It's hard to argue that the actress Meryl Streep -- who has garnered 16 Oscar nominations (more than any other male or female in history), two of which resulted in wins -- is under-appreciated by the Academy. That, however, is precisely what I've felt the urge to do since screening the latest film in which she stars, Phyllida Lloyd's The Iron Lady, earlier this week.our editor recommendsMeryl Streep's 'The Iron Lady' Sparks Internet Frenzy Following Early ScreeningsMeryl Streep Debuts New 'Iron Lady' Poster and Trailer in U.K. (Video)Meryl Streep: 5 Things To KnowMeryl Streep Movie 'The Iron Lady' to Open Dec. 30 PHOTOS: Hollywood's 10 Highest-Paid Actresses If anyone needed a reminder that Streep is the world's greatest living actress, this performance is it. She transforms -- body, soul, and, as always, accent -- into former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, who is not exactly history's most likable or sympathetic character, but who is humanized by the actress to an extent that I never thought imaginable. It's almost beside the point to talk about the film overall, since Streep's performance so dominates it. Sure, Alexandra Roach is quite good as the younger version of Maggie; Jim Broadbent does his usual solid character work as the older version's put-upon husband Denis Thatcher; and Alexander Head is perfectly fine as Thatcher's political ally-turned-challenger Geoffrey Howe. But the fact of the matter is that there is one reason to see The Iron Lady: it features the best actress that we have working at the top of her game. The question, of course, is whether that's good enough for the Academy, which has, on 14 occasions, nominated Streep but chosen to honor someone else -- including three of the last five years, even though she was perfectly worthy of a win for her extraordinary work in The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and/or Doubt (2008) and/or Julie & Julia (2009). It's not like the performances that beat hers -- Helen Mirren in The Queen (2006), Kate Winslet in The Reader (2008), and Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side (2009) -- were markedly better. (In fact, I would argue that only Mirren's even might have been worthier.) And it's not like Streep is unliked -- in fact, she seems to be adored and revered by her peers. (Indeed, both Winslet and Bullock specifically acknowledged her from the podium when delivering their Oscar acceptance speeches, with Winslet saying, "I think we all can't believe we're in a category with Meryl Streep at all!") So how does one explain it? PHOTOS: Actors Who've Played Politicians Here's my theory: most people -- including Academy members -- aren't exactly up on their Oscar stats. What they know about Streep is that she seems to be nominated every year, and that she doesn't campaign to win nearly as aggressively as her competitors, so, understandably enough, they conclude that she has been properly taken care of over the years ("She must have six Oscars by now!") and isn't especially hungry for further recognition ("In that case, let's give someone else a chance this time!"). The cold, hard facts, however, tell a different story, and should be noted by voters henceforth. Consider the following numbers... 29 -- The number of years that it's been since Meryl Streep last won an Oscar -- in other words, a full generation of people, including myself, have come of age without ever having seen her honored for her work by the Academy. 3 -- The number of best actress Oscars that Katharine Hepburn -- the actress to whom Streep is most often compared and the only other one who ever seems to top lists of the greatest movie actresses of all-time -- had won by the time she was Streep's current age (62); Hepburn would go on to win another to bring her total to four. 1 -- The number of best actress Oscars that Streep has won. It came for Sophie's Choice (1982); her first Oscar, which came three years earlier for Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), was for best supporting actress. To put things in some perspective, this is the same number of best actress Oscars that have been won by Cher, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, and Reese Witherspoon. 2 -- The number of best actress Oscars that Hilary Swank has won. In pointing out this disparity I mean no disrespect to Swank, who is a terrific actress in her own right... but I think that even Swank would acknowledge that it's a bit messed up that she has twice as many best actress Oscars as Meryl Streep. One never wants to bet against a project that stars Meryl Streep, but it has taken an unsettlingly long time for Phyllida Lloyd's biopic of Margaret Thatcher to get finished, trailered, and screened. Tintin's North American premiere at AFI Fest confirmed that it is a film with huge box-office potential -- and that its helmer's chances for a seventh best director nod rest solely with War Horse. BEST ACTOR Frontrunners Jean Dujardin (The Artist) George Clooney (The Descendants) Brad Pitt (Moneyball) Leonardo DiCaprio (J. I'm hearing that the star of War Horse -- which will begin screening for press at the end of this month -- is not its leading man (who apparently does a perfectly fine job with limited screen time), but rather its title character. BEST ACTRESS Frontrunners Viola Davis (The Help) Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn) Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs) Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Major Threats Keira Knightley (A Dangerous Method) Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) Charlize Theron (Young Adult) Michelle Yeoh (The Lady) Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) Possibilities Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre) Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia) Adepero Oduye (Pariah) Ellen Barkin (Another Happy Day) Rachel Weisz (The Whistleblower) Vera Farmiga (Higher Ground) Nobody has been more a trouper on the awards trail this year than the five-time nominee, who has hobknobbed around the world on behalf of her film (she's picked up no fewer than three career achievement awards at this point), and who was a hit at Saturday's Governors Awards. Unfortunately, Cannes' best actress winner has been unable to get out from under the shadow of her director Lars von Trier's Nazi-sympathizing comments, which come up in conversation every time her film or performance does. Reilly (Carnage) Jim Broadbent (The Iron Lady) Brad Pitt (The Tree of Life) George Clooney (The Ides of March) Viggo Mortensen (A Dangerous Method) The last few years have proven that actors are rewarded in the supporting actor category for being bad -- or at least playing bad boys, like Brooks's homocidal psychopath. See: Javier Bardem, Heath Ledger, Christoph Waltz, and Christian Bale. There are few better actors than Mortensen, but this intellectually-demanding film and his brief but nuanced performance in it both seem to have gotten lost in the shuffle. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Frontrunners Octavia Spencer (The Help) Berenice Bejo (The Artist) Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) Jessica Chastain (The Help) Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs) Major Threats Vanessa Redgrave (Coriolanus) Sandra Bullock (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) Carey Mulligan (Shame) Evan Rachel Wood (The Ides of March) Judy Greer (The Descendants) Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life) Possibilities Jodie Foster (Carnage) Kate Winslet (Carnage) Marion Cotillard (Midnight in Paris) Emily Watson (War Horse) Judi Dench (J. Edgar) Scarlett Johansson (We Bought a Zoo) True, the Emmy winner's performance is not of the sort that usually registers with the Academy -- but the same was true of Robert Downey Jr.'s in Tropic Thunder, and he made the cut. Likability matters, too, and McCarthy, like Downey, oozes it. The Dame has appeared this year in three noteworthy films -- Jane Eyre, My Week with Marilyn, and J. Edgar -- which is pretty amazing for a 76-year-old. Unfortunately, none of her parts have had quite enough meat on the bones to merit a nomination. BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY Frontrunners Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash (The Descendants) Tate Taylor (The Help) Richard Curtis, Lee Hall (War Horse) Eric Roth (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Steven Zaillian (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Major Threats Stan Chervin, Aaron Sorkin, Steven Zaillian (Moneyball) George Clooney, Grant Heslov (The Ides of March) Bridget O'Connor, Peter Straughan (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) John Logan (Hugo) Pedro Almodovar (The Skin I Live In) Hossein Amini (Drive) Possibilities Roman Polanski (Carnage) Christopher Hampton (A Dangerous Method) Cameron Crowe, Aline Brosh McKenna (We Bought a Zoo) James Ellroy, Oren Moverman (Rampart) John Logan (Coriolanus) There probably isn't any category in which The Descendants is more likely to be recognized than this one -- Payne, who is about as revered a screenwriter as there is, was nominated in it twice before, winning for Sideways (2004). I saw this film on the opening night of the NY Film Festival and liked it quite a lot, but the general consensus seems to be that it pales in comparison to God of Carnage, the Tony winning stage play that inspired it. BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Frontrunners Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris) Dustin Lance Black (J. Edgar) J.C. Chandor (Margin Call) NEW Mike Mills (Beginners) Major Threats Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy Mae Marlene) Abi Morgan, Steve McQueen (Shame) Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) Diablo Cody (Young Adult) Tom McCarthy, Joe Tiboni (Win Win) James Ward Byrkit, John Logan, Gore Verbinski (Rango) Drake Doremus, Ben York Jones (Like Crazy) Possibilities Annie Mumolo, Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) Will Reiser (50/50) Asghar Farhadi (A Separation) Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter) Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady) J.J. Abrams (Super 8) Dee Rees (Pariah) His poignant script is based largely on his own experiences -- for instance, his own elderly father, like the character played by Plummer in the film, came out of the closet to him shortly before dying of cancer -- a talking point that plays very well in Q&As and interviews. Very few foreign language films have managed to score an Oscar nod outside of the foreign language category, and this worthy winner of the Berlin Film Festival seems unlikely to buck that trend. BEST ANIMATED FILM (FEATURE) Frontrunners Rango (Paramount, 3/4, PG, trailer) The Adventures of Tintin (Paramount, 12/21, PG, trailer) Cars 2 (Disney, 6/24, G, trailer) Happy Feet 2 (Warner Brothers, 11/18, PG, trailer) Puss in Boots (DreamWorks, 11/4, PG, trailer) Major Threats Arthur Christmas (Sony, 11/23, PG, trailer) Kung Fu Panda 2 (DreamWorks, 5/26, PG, trailer) Rio (20th Century Fox, 4/15, G, trailer) Possibilities Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked (20th Century Fox, 12/11, TBA, trailer) Winnie the Pooh (Disney, 7/15, G, trailer) The Smurfs (Sony, 7/29, PG, trailer) The Lion of Judah (Animated Family Films, 6/3, TBA, trailer) BEST DOCUMENTARY FILM (FEATURE) Frontrunners The Interrupters (The Cinema Guild, 7/29, TBA, trailer) Project Nim (Roadside Attractions, 7/8, PG-13, trailer) Senna (Producers Distribution Agency, 8/12, PG-13, trailer) Buck (IFC Films, 6/17, PG, trailer) Into the Abyss (Sundance Selects, 11/11, TBA, TBA) Major Threats If a Tree Falls (Oscilloscope, 6/22, TBA, trailer) Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey (Submarine Deluxe, TBA, trailer) Bill Cunningham NY (Zeitgeist Films, 3/16, TBA, trailer) The Island President (Samuel Goldwyn Films, 11/8, TBA, TBA) Better This World (Bullfrog Films, 8/26, TBA, trailer) Koran by Heart (HBO Documentary Films, TBA, TBA, trailer) Tabloid (Sundance Selects, 7/15, R, trailer) Page One: Inside the NY Times (Magnolia, 6/24, TBA, trailer) We Were Here (Red Flag Releasing, 9/?, TBA, trailer) Hell and Back Again (Docurama Films, 10/5, TBA, trailer) Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory (HBO Documentary Films, TBA, TBA, trailer) Possibilities The Rescuers (Menemsha Films, TBA, TBA, trailer) The Bully Project (The Weinstein Company, TBA, TBA, trailer) Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel (Anchor Bay Films, 10/16, TBA, trailer) Magic Trip (Magnolia, 8/5, TBA, trailer) The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 (Sundance Selects, 9/9, TBA, trailer) Hot Coffee (HBO Documentaries, 6/27, TBA, trailer) Pearl Jam Twenty (Abramorama, 9/20, R, trailer) Bobby Fischer Against the World (HBO Documentary Films, TBA, TBA, TBA) The Whale (Paladin, TBA, TBA, TBA) Revenge of the Electric Car (Westmidwest Productions, TBA, TBA, trailer) The Greatest Movie Ever Sold (Sony Pictures Classics, 4/22, PG-13, trailer) Still Seeking Domestic Distribution Bombay Beach The Carrier Footnote Semper Fi: Always Faithful (trailer) BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM Frontrunners A Separation (Iran) Where Do We Go Now? It had been made the decision in the 11thhour."What came next was a number of conferences that presented this guitar rock band having a global plan that incorporated extensive marketing, retailing, touring and, obviously, tracks. What exactly derailed the Columbia deal? The typical rock-band complications, states an insider. As the group reunited with original singerDavid Lee Rothin 2006, the The new sony label couldn't be prepared for Roth, that has another management, legal and accounting team compared to other three people, guitarist Eddie Van Halen and the boy Wolfgang, who changed bassistMichael Anthony, anddrummer Alex Van Halen. The primary problem for Roth? He was apparently adamant about standing on a west coast label. "He never was aboard [with Columbia]," states the origin. "It had been as complicated as anybody would imagine, when one for reds states black, another states whitened. The label was pretty skeptical that things works out." It's expected that as frontman, Roth will need to carry a lot of the marketing burden also it appears this guitar rock band people ultimately want their singer to be pleased with the offer and that's why they opted for Universal's west coast-based Interscope. Spot the Similarities Between Robert Pattinson in Cosmopolis and Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver

Any photo of Robert Pattinson is embraced by the Internet, so this week’s brand new Cosmopolis stills featuring the Twilight heartthrob were a welcome Web treat. But one of the photos struck me as eerily reminiscent of a classic image from Taxi Driver, which got me thinking about the similarities between Pattinson’s upcoming David Cronenberg-directed project and Martin Scorsese’s famous De Niro vehicle. Can you spot the likenesses? I’ll start you off… · Both dramas feature the above still of their main characters pointing a gun to the upper left corner of the frame. (Obviously.) · Both Cosmopolis and Taxi Driver chronicle the lives of two Manhattan-ites who spend the majority of their screen time driving around NY City in a car. · Both films’ protagonists need a haircut. This is not just a tongue-in-cheek observation. Cosmopolis actually centers on a 28-year-old billionaire traversing the Big Apple in search of a haircut. Taxi Driver features a violent, insomniac Vietnam vet whose long hours, proclivity for seedy porn theaters and his depression keep him away from the barbershop. Do you see any other similarities? · Robert Pattinson Traverses Manhattan in ‘Cosmopolis’ [THR]

New Clips In The Rum Diary

The Actor-brad Pitt demands to possess some boozeIf you've read Hunter Thompson's The Rum Diary you know that although it's a lot of things - riotous, chaotic, colourful - what it really is not is definitely an clearly 'filmy' book. There's very little conflict, little requirement for resolution with no large villain to possess audiences hissing in the screen. On the other hand, such like was stated about Fear And Loathing In Vegas which wound up winning a place in cult movie paradise. This, we suspect, is how Bruce Robinson is available in. It is a greatly welcome return for that Withnail And That I director, coaxed from semi-retirement by The Actor-brad Pitt to create and direct. The humour and none-more-quotable patter that made Withnail great, coupled with Thompson's acidity prose, should alllow for a feast for fans of wise scriptwriting and blackly comic moments. Dawn of the undead

Beck worked on the singular musical episode of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' titled 'Once More With Feeling.'Christophe Beck worked on more than a dozen TV series, and won an Emmy, before he got his big feature-film break with the cheerleading movie "Bring It On" in 2000.From UPN's sitcom "Pig Sty" to ABC's "Spy Game," nearly all of Beck's TV career was for short-lived or ill-fated series. But one stands out, and helped propel Beck into the film career he has today: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."Beck scored half of its second, and all of its third and fourth seasons (from 1997 to 2000), winning an Emmy at the end of his first year. "Musique Fantastique" author Randall Larson says: "The music is incredibly rich in emotional layers and aggressive potency. It's by far some of the best music that has ever graced the smallscreen.""TV scoring is a great training ground," Beck says. "You have to do so much work so quickly. One thing 'Buffy' did for me was to really hone my fake-orchestra producing skills." Budgetary constraints forced him to produce the weekly score on synthesizers, although he added one or more musicians (usually a woodwind player), which "made everything sound more real."But, he adds: "No matter how far you get in TV, it's really like starting from scratch when you go to do films. So after three seasons of 'Buffy' and one season of 'The Practice,' I quit.""Bring It On" and "Big Fat Liar" came along over the next two years and Beck was able to transition to a full-time film career. But all that electronic music for TV made Beck a whiz at a skill that is now deemed crucial for every composer in film: the mock-up, whereby a director can hear a synthesized approximation of every cue and thus not be surprised when they hear it played live, days or weeks later, by an orchestra.BILLION-DOLLAR COMPOSER: CHRISTOPHE BECK Beck's green phase | Resurrecting 'Muppets' in Disney tradition | Dawn of the undead | Beck's music in his own words | Beck, private school grad, gives back Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

HBO Shuts Down Its Casting Department

EXCLUSIVE: HBO is shutting down its casting department, with its staff, led by 14-year HBO veteran, SVP Carrie Frazier, and VP Amy Jo Berman, exiting. HBO uses outside casting directors on all of its projects, with the in-house casting executives playing a supplemental role, mostly on the longform side. With the pay cable network’s movie and miniseries output decreasing over the past few years, HBO brass have made a decision to close that department. The network may revisit their casting needs in the future. HBO’s decision is the latest in a growing cost-cutting trend over the past several years on both the TV and feature side that involves the downsizing/eliminating in-house casting departments or the phasing out of seasoned senior staff casting executives. Rick Jacobs left Lifetime 2 years ago as part of the company-wide layoffs. NBC’s Marc Hirschfeld was let go from NBC in the 2008 executive shakeup. Walt Disney Studios dropped Marcia Ross in February. Beth Klein exited Showtime in April after 23 years. (She has since landed at Universal Television) The list goes on. “Sometimes they are replaced by junior casting execs at a fraction of the cost. Many times they eliminate the position entirely,” one industry insider said. “Hiring a casting consultant as a freelance is a way to keep your headcount low.” Newer players in the original programming arena forgo the casting department route altogether. Starz, for instance, has never had one. Instead, the network has a non-exclusive deal with Hirschfeld who serves as their casting consultant.

Co-produced by Revolution Films, the Uk production company behind IFCs The Trip, the Peter Morgan-scripted feature follows a sexual circle of prostitution, infidelity and soul mates. Anthony Hopkins, Rachel Weisz and Jude Law star. Paris-based telemarketer Wild Bunch is selling the BBC Films-backed project worldwide. Reviews here today are actually pretty moderate: The Daily Telegraph made clear the film just like a glossily unengaging trudge through other artists love lives explaining one moment where a character imagines an plane moving away his lover as spectacularly stupid. The Occasions located in london offers the film a significant dismissive 3-star review, calling the plot improbable, and mentioned the merry-go-round structure crushes performances into twenty-minute slots that frequently don't elicit our sympathy. The Evening Standard though was much more positive, calling 360 a correctly-crafted package together with a movie of lovely moments, elegant structure and vivid locations. Planners in the LFF drummed up some star energy with Jude Law speaking round the red-colored-colored carpet Anthony Hopkins and Rachel Weisz though werent available. Weisz, who stars in LFF closing film The Dark Blue Sea on October 27, was busy in NY filming while Hopkins, Im told, does not enjoy travelling. Personally, I believed that Hopkins gave an amazing performance just like a sober alcoholic although given his extended link with Aa, you must do question simply how much of just one scene where he shares within an AA meeting was ad-libbed while Ben Promote was scarily unpredictable just like a billed child rapist.

Fantastic Fest: Rom-Com Extraterrestrial , Erotic Musical Underwater Love Charm with Lies and Turtle Sex

Four years after bringing his feature debut Timecrimes to Fantastic Fest (where it won the Best Picture award), Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo returned to Austin, a place so warm and familiar he liked it to returning to the womb. “It’s like going back into my mother’s vagina,” exclaimed Vigalondo, addressing the friendly crowd at the debut of his sophomore film, Extraterrestrial. “So I get inside my mother’s vagina, and for some reason you are all there inside!” Extraterrestrial is a vastly different film than Vigalondo’s time-travel thriller Timecrimes, but it’s just as well matched to the Fantastic Fest spirit, a sweet little romantic comedy in the guise of an alien invasion movie. It begins one day as Julio (Julin Villagrn) wakes up the morning after a drunken one night stand with Julia (Michelle Jenner), a gorgeous but mysteriously aloof young lady who can’t seem to wait for her hook-up to leave, already, until both realize the city outside is strangely quiet. While they’ve been asleep, alien ships have materialized in the skies and the population evacuated, leaving them alone with no internet, no cell service, and only each other to depend on. That is, until Julia’s awkward neighbor ngel (Carlos Areces, star of last year’s terrifically twisted Fantastic Fest entry The Last Circus) reveals he’s stayed behind as well, not so secretly because he’s desperately in love with Julia. And then Julia’s boyfriend Carlos (Ral Cimas) returns home for her, bearing tales of government quarantines, and leaving the foursome locked in an amusing mire of shifting relationships, shared lies, and increasingly paranoid fears that there might actually be a real alien among them. Vigalondo lends a sharp sense of humor to the proceedings, and despite occasionally using clumsy fade outs to get from scene to scene, the film makes its way to a sweet, unconventionally romantic ending. It is, at its core, more character-driven romantic comedy than science fiction film, the ultimate realization of which may turn off those expecting the latter. But, as Vigalondo explained of his misleading alien element, “There is no reason. It’s like The Birds. You like The Birds? It’s a classic!” — Speaking of sweetly romantic but unconventional Fantastic Fest entries, just try to wrap your head around Shinji Imaoka’s Underwater Love: It’s a pink film, meaning it follows in the grand tradition of Japanese softcore erotic cinema, it’s a musical featuring songs by German duo Stereo Total, and the story — well, it involves a thirty-something woman named Asuka (Sawa Masaki) visited by a former classmate, Aoki (Yoshir Umezawa), who died 17 years ago and came back to life as a dancing, cucumber-earing mythical turtle-like creature called a kappa. Then there’s the chain-smoking, dress-wearing supernatural hippie, the death clock, the inter-species coupling, and the anal pearls. But more on those delights later. Shot by renowned DP Christopher Doyle (whose love for the drink came up uncomfortably often in the film’s intro and Q&A), Underwater Love is disappointingly unpretty to look at, thanks perhaps to a limited budget but probably more to a decision to pursue a washed-out visual look. Still, every now and then comes a breathtaking Doyle composition; the blue sky reflected in a stream, or fast-motion time lapse lingering on the solemn body of a naked woman in a river. But shot in about a week and with a cheeky acceptance of its limitations (Example: The “kappa” is an actor wearing a visibly fake turtle mask. Just go with it!), Underwater Love gets the basic job done, which is to bring a wonderfully perverse (in a good way) and playful love story to life. The musical aspect, however, is a letdown, despite an opening number set in a factory that called to mind Bjork and Catherine Deneuve frolicking among machinery in Dancer in the Dark. Imaoka admitted he only included it because he was asked to by higher ups, and considering that the whole production completed filming within just eight days (a luxury by pink film standards, apparently), who can blame him for at least trying? If anything, the nonsensical lyrics and awkward choreography only lend more wild whimsy to the show. Which brings me to the anal pearls. Rest assured this is the only film in history that will feature comically childlike turtle-people having sex with human women (the turtle penis fellatio scene is a LOL-worthy highlight) and pulling magical rocks out of their crotches which, if inserted into a human’s anus, will avert death. And I guarantee you’ll never see a case of necrophilia-as-CPR again on film — at least, it couldn’t possibly be as desperately romantic as it is here.
