Al Pacino and the cast and crew talk Scarface

If there's anyone who would appreciate pulling out the big guns it's Tony Montana, so it's appropriate that there were some pretty big names at the Scarface Blu-ray launch in LA.Stars Al Pacino (Tony Montana), Steven Bauer (Manny Ribera), Robert Loggia (Frank Lopez), F. Murray Abraham (Omar Suarez) and producer Martin Bregman chatted on stage at the Belasco Theatre.TF had a seat front and centre (and the largest Jameson on the rocks we've ever been handed) as they served up what was coming to us: the world of Scarface and everything in it.Amazingly, the idea to remake Howard Hawks' 1932 film Scarface came from Pacino himself."My first experience [of the story] was seeing the Howard Hawks film Scarface and it was at the Tiffany Theatre here in Los Angeles on Sunset Boulevard. I went and saw the film and called Martin Bregman and said I think we could do this thing as a remake or something."And he very wisely and very astutely saw it, got out there, got it and put the whole thing together. I want to thank the late Sidney Lumet. It was his idea to have Tony Montana come from the boat lift in Cuba," Pacino remembered. From there Bregman had to put together the American Dream team, so to speak, of Brian De Palma and Oliver Stone. "I would like to say it took a lot of work but it didn't. It took four phone calls," Bregman claimed. "It was very interesting for me because I thought Oliver Stone and Brian De Palma were so different. Anyone who knows the film knows they did things differently. Oliver is much more socio-political involved in that, and Brian also has concerns about society but he also likes to do big things - pictures that have size. And I think that was his idea. And this merging of the two of them I think really was the key because I expected them to clash but they did the contrary. I think that's what's there up on that screen," Pacino recalled."Oliver was banned from the set," adds Abraham.Of course Pacino was going to be first choice to play Tony Montana."Martin Bregman discovered me off Broadway. I was 26, 25. And he discovered me and became my manager. And that's why I'm here. I owe it to Marty, I really do," Pacino said.Asked if he could see the talent within Pacino, Bregman replied: "Very quick answer: yes. He moved me. The first time I saw him on stage he just moved me. I got involved in what he was trying to do and what he was doing. It was a little play done by Israel Burrows and I never saw anything like that before. Another client of mine told me to go see him, forced me to. She came to my house one day and said I saw an extraordinary actor you have to go see him." That client: Faye Dunaway.Still, the cast didn't know they were working on something that would later be hailed as a classic of the genre (Bregman calls it "a perfect film"). All they could do was put in a great performance."We rehearsed the movie. We weren't just going in there and doing it," revealed Loggia. "And by the time we got to perform we were flying, we had wings. And we delivered.""It's also the reinvention of it, the fact that it came out and was not received that well," added Pacino. "And we didn't feel that we were in something that was going to be lasting. It's amazing when something like that happens."It's very rare that a movie opens and it's usually instantly made as a classic, it's not eviscerated in the way this was and treated with disrespect. But as time went on it just stayed there and had this rebirth. It's almost like a miracle. There's a great expression, man's reach should exceed his grasp or what's a heaven for? And I think that's what we see in this movie."What would happen if this movie opened next week? Would it have the same kind of reaction? And I sort of think it would. The controversy over it [would be the same], because it does have built in controversy."For Pacino a big part of film's lasting charm - if that's the right word for a movie that at one stage held the record for the most F-bombs - is that there has been no sequel to tarnish it in the fans eyes."There's no part two, Scarface 3. There's none of that with this picture, it's just Scarface. And I think there's something about that," he said."Can I tell you why? Because who would want to be held up to this," said Steven Bauer, before joking, "Also, he died. Everybody died!""Every one of us is dead. That was a mistake Marty! You missed that one," offered Abrahams."Everybody is always saying but Manny your toes were wiggling when we pulled away. Your toes were wiggling, you survived. And I'm like, no I didn't," Bauer added, closing the door to a sequel once and for all. Scarface is released on Blu-ray on 5 September 2011.

Chris Evans and Chaos in Cleveland on the Set of 'The Avengers' (VIDEO)

Tired of all these sneak peeks on the set of 'The Dark Knight Rises' that are spoiling all the stuff we're gonna see when the actual movie comes out next year? Neither are we, and it looks like Marvel is taking note. Since filming big-budget blockbusters in broad daylight for everyone with a camera phone to capture and share on YouTube seems like the guerilla marketing of choice these days, we now have a brand new look at the Cleveland set of 'The Avengers,' thanks to Medical Mutual of Ohio, The Plain Dealer and Celebuzz. We're still not exactly sure what it is we're looking at or what everyone's running away from, but at least Chris Evans is looking dapper as usual. Go ahead and see if you can make heads or tails out of the anarchy in the streets (which have been made to look like NYC) on the set of 'The Avengers': Something tells us The Hulk had something to do with all that ruckus, but head on over to Celebuzz for more pics of Evans on-set. NY Film Fest Adds Galas For David Cronenberg And Pedro Almodovar Films

New York, NY, August 15, 2011 - The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced the first-time addition of two Galas to join the Opening, Centerpiece and Closing Night Galas for the upcoming 49th New York Film Festival (September 30 October 16) with David Cronenbergs A DANGEROUS METHOD set to screen on Wednesday, October 5 and Pedro Almodovars THE SKIN I LIVE IN on Wednesday, October 12. "Were delighted to be welcoming David Cronenberg to the festival for the first time and to be welcoming back one of the NYFFs closest friends, Pedro Almodovar, says Richard Pea, Selection Committee Chair & Program Director, The Film Society of Lincoln Center. Its a special pleasure to introduce our audiences to exciting new work by two of contemporary cinemas most challenging artists. Scheduled at Alice Tully Hall on Wednesday, October 5 will be David Cronenbergs A DANGEROUS METHOD. Adapted by Christopher Hampton from his play The Talking Cure, the film chronicles the ever-shifting relationship between Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen). Basking at first in Freuds approval and encouragement, Jung increasingly questions his theories and methods. At the heart of their dispute is their rival approaches to the beautiful yet deeply unbalanced Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightly), who eventually draws each man under her spell. Produced by Jeremy Thomas, the Sony Pictures Classics release also stars Vincent Cassel and Sarah Gordon. The film is set for a November 23 release. Presented the following Wednesday, on October 12, will be Pedro Almodvars THE SKIN I LIVE IN. Reuniting the director with Antonio Banderas, the star of several of his early films, this dramatic thriller was written by Almodovar in collaboration with brother and producer, Agustin, based on Thierry Jonquets novel Mygale. Dr. Robert Ledgard (Banderas) is a world famous plastic surgeon who argues for the development of new, tougher human skin; unbeknownst to others, Dr. Ledgard has been trying to put his theory into practice, keeping a young woman, Vera (Elena Anaya), imprisoned in his mansion while subjecting her to an increasingly bizarre regime of treatments. Fascinated by the thin layer of appearance that stands between our perception of someone and that persons inner essence, Almodvar here addresses that continuing theme in his work in a bold, unsettling exploration of identity. Almodvar regular Marisa Paredes offers another winning performance as Marilia, Ledgards faithful assistant. A Sony Pictures Classics release is scheduled to open October 14. Commenting on the first-time addition of the two Galas to join the Opening, Closing and Centerpiece events headlining the NYFF lineup this year, Rose Kuo, Executive Director, The Film Society of Lincoln Center, said, "This year has seen a great deal of growth for us with the opening of our new Film Center and we are thrilled to continue that expansion at this years NYFF. We will be offering more screenings, panels, and family events as well as these two new marquee nights that feature highly anticipated fall films."

Watch the Still-Heartbreaking Full Trailer for Sundance Fave Like Crazy

Paramount Vantage wants you to fall in love with Like Crazy like crazy. (Ding!) Less than a week after debuting the teaser trailer for the Sundance award-winning brokenhearted romance — and after fixing an apparently cruddy and blogger infuriating sound-mix with a second teaser — the full-length trailer for the film has arrived with less fanfare, but more Felicity Jones. Judging from the two-minute clip, that’s a huge win; girl’s gonna be a star! Click through to watch. Like Crazy has been described as a cross between Blue Valentine and (500) Days of Summer, which — yeah. Exactly. Contrary alert! Despite some major handwringing about the Ingrid Michaelson cover of “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, it seems like the perfect music cue for this downbeat affair. (I may or may not be listening to it right now on Spotify.) (May.) VERDICT: Can’t help falling in love with this trailer. Head over to Apple to watch in HD.

Emmys 2011: The 10 Contests That Matter

ABC/Karen Neal As The Hollywood Reporter's designated Emmy predictor, I was 76 percent correct in forecasting the nominations. (With 77 percent, I would have tied for Best Forecaster in the Gold Derby national Emmy pundits poll. Just saying.) But what's fun about the race, since nominations were announced, is what was unexpected: HBO's trouncing of AMC, Kyra Sedgwick's and Lea Michele's snubs and the emergence of dark-horse contenders like Johnny Galecki and Melissa McCarthy -- who was so shocked to hear her own name while announcing the nominations that she almost collapsed. "My left knee completely buckled," she tells THR. "I thought: 'You're in a skirt. Don't pass out!' " To help you avoid such unsettling surprises, here is our guide to the 10 most exciting races, who's going to win and what it all might mean. PHOTOS: Emmy Nomination Snubs, Shockers and Surprises BEST DRAMA The Field For the first time since 2005, HBO has two contenders in the category -- Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones -- and a near lock on this award. Even if AMC's Mad Men prevails, predictions (like mine) that AMC might eclipse HBO's Emmy dominance were wrong. The biggest news in the most important Emmy race is HBO's surprise hit, Thrones. Pundits thought it was too weird, too confusingly complicated and too late an entry even to get a nom. And it's in the Emmy-despised fantasy genre. Critic Troy Patterson dissed it as "quasi-medieval, dragon-ridden fantasy crap." (Seen Harry Potter's grosses lately? Audiences crave a dragon ride.) It's likely that fewer voters actually saw Thrones than, say, Boardwalk -- but they sure heard somebody tell them they simply had to. TV Academy chair John Shaffner tells THR it's the most buzzed-about new show, hailed in places you wouldn't expect. "There has been an undercurrent that's reached all the way into the membership," he says. Academy senior vp awards John Leverence says Thrones is this year's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, whose perpetual Emmy snub caused an uprising. True Blood broke the Emmy curse on the genre with a nom last year but didn't get a bite this time around. Thrones shows that fantasy can rule. If Thrones earns an incredible win in September, look for a dragon invasion on TV. As for fan favorite Friday Night Lights, nominated for the first time for its final season, sadly, it's still an Emmy long shot at best. The Winner Most likely the prestige-reeking Boardwalk, whose Emmy-contending "Pilot" episode cost nearly $20 million -- likely more than half a season of Mad Men. But Men, in its best season yet, actually got more Emmy noms (19, to Boardwalk's 18) and could edge out the HBO series with a historic fourth consecutive win, equaling NBC's The West Wing and Hill Street Blues. Emmy Trivia: Friday Night Lights isn't the first drama to get its one and only series nomination for its final season. Star Trek: The Next Generation also earned thedistinction, in 1994. PHOTOS: 2011 Emmy Nominations BEST COMEDY The Field The academy is finally getting the message that comedy nominees need to be funny: Nurse Jackie and The Big C weren't nominated, and yuk-a-minute Modern Family rules, actually benefiting from castmember Ed O'Neill's shocking snub last year. The biggest shock of all: All of this year's six nominated comedies are network shows. The Winner Stop me if you've heard this: Modern Family will win. Again. Chomping at its giant heels are The Big Bang Theory, a 2011 Globe nominee, and Parks and Recreation, which has that Friday Night Lights/underdog thing going. The Office, 30 Rock and Glee might actually be better shows, but as Emmy hopefuls, they're toast. Emmy Trivia: The last time all of the comedy series nominees were network shows was in 2005, when Everybody Loves Raymond took home the top prize. ANALYSIS: The Emmys Revert to (Bad) Form MINISERIES/MOVIES The Field Although many suspect that the merging of the movie and miniseries categories was basically done to keep HBO from dominating yet again, no dice. Unlike Eddard Stark in Game of Thrones, no HBO exec need fear certain beheading. The Winner Mildred Pierce. Downton Abbey may be better, but PBS' campaign budget (jestingly estimated at $29) won't catch enough voters' attention. Starz's The Pillars of the Earth also has small-profile problems. The Kennedys got more respect than anyone expected, but voters are more apt to watch it than admit it in the morning. Too Big to Fail is an all-star ensemble, but Kate Winslet is the one who's too big to fail. Emmy Trivia: The most Emmys won by a miniseries has been 13, by HBO's John Adams in 2008. STORY: Emmy Nominations 2011: Full List DRAMA ACTRESS The Winner It's the year's most unpredictable race, with two big surprise noms: Harry's Law's Kathy Bates and The Killing's Mireille Enos, who survived a firestorm of criticism following the series' red-herring season finale. There's also perennial nominee Mariska Hargitay, Mad Men's skyrocketing Elisabeth Moss, Friday Night Lights' Connie Britton and Julianna Margulies of The Good Wife. "Network talent did really well this year," says Shaffner. "The bar continues to be raised by cable, and the networks are trying harder than ever before." Leverence notes that the nets are challenging cable's Emmy-nom lead: "I did some studying, and I got non-cable 47 percent and cable 53 percent. When you put in a factor of error, it's virtually a dead heat." The Winner Margulies. After an unbelievable loss last year to five-time nominee Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer), the good wife is a good bet (and Sedgwick got the Emmy-nom snub this time). As surprises go, Moss could pull an upset thanks to her killer Mad Men episode "The Suitcase." Emmy Trivia: Kathy Bates is the sole Oscar winner among this year's series acting nominees. STORY: Emmy Nominations: 'Mildred Pierce,' 'Mad Men' Lead COMEDY ACTRESS The Field Nobody was more stunned by their noms than Mike & Molly's Melissa McCarthy and Raising Hope's Martha Plimpton. Riding high from Bridesmaids and Mike & Molly, McCarthy is now the one everybody's talking about -- not Glee's Lea Michele, who was snubbed this year. The Winner Laura Linney (The Big C). Yes, Emmy legend Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie) was last year's champ, but Linney won the best Emmy predictor prize, the Golden Globe (her second), in January. She also co-starred in the Emmy hauler John Adams and has three Oscar noms plus Tony mentions DRAMA ACTOR The Field For Mad Men's front-runner Jon Hamm, it's the best of times and the worst. Chronic winner Bryan Cranston is out because of Breaking Bad's hiatus, giving Hamm a shot. But rival Steve Buscemi of Boardwalk Empire won the Globe and SAG awards and outranks him in movie and Emmy-winning prestige. If Hamm wins, it's because his tight-lipped character finally opened his emotional kimono. For all its hoopla, Mad Men has never won acting Emmys, perhaps because until now it has been too restrained. The Winner Buscemi or Hamm in a dead heat. It would be infinitely more satisfying if Kyle Chandler completed a Hail Mary pass and seized the Emmy in the last sudden-death-overtime moment of Friday Night Lights, but count on HBO or AMC to propel one of their men to victory. VIDEO: Emmy Roundtable: Drama Actors COMEDY ACTOR The Field Amazingly, both Big Bang Theory's Johnny Galecki and last year's winner, Jim Parsons, are competing. "There'll be a cage match," Galecki tells THR. "I'm doing my crunches now." Ironically, Galecki was originally sought for Parsons' role. The Winner Steve Carell (The Office). The academy is rife with grief about his exit from the show -- and likely a little embarrassed for having snubbed the actor five times. MINISERIES/MOVIES ACTRESS The Field It's a two-dame race between Diane Lane (Cinema Verite) and Oscar winner Kate Winslet (Mildred Pierce, which got more Emmy noms, 21, than any other show). But there were surprises, too. Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson (The Tiffany Rubin Story) adds needed racial diversity to the contest. Other unexpected noms: Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey) and Jean Marsh (Upstairs Downstairs). But the real news was Lane's recognition for Verite. Who knew her star power could rival that of the massively promoted Winslet? The Winner Winslet. Like Claire Danes riding last year's Temple Grandin tsunami, Winslet's epic will sweep away the small fry. PHOTOS: David Strick 2011 Emmy Nominees SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A COMEDY The Field Chris Colfer is still Glee's biggest breakout star, but he's not "funny." (Maybe if he were as huge a star as Linney or Falco, we'd forgive this.) Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men) got his Emmy in 2009, and while nobody blames him for Charlie Sheen's implosion, few are itching to fete the show. Modern Family's quadruple supporting noms (Jesse T. Ferguson, Ed O'Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Ty Burrell) show that ensembles have the upper hand over single-star-based comedies. Many say there should be an Emmy for ensemble, like SAG's. Family's series win will in effect be that award -- again. The Winner Somebody from Modern Family. Many are rooting for Burrell, but last year's winner, Stonestreet, is still a huge fan favorite. (Sorry, Ed.) Emmy Trivia: Cheers is the only other series to have all of its eligible supporting actors -- like those on Modern Family -- nominated in a single year (1990). REALITY COMPETITION The Field The seven-year struggle to give anyone besides The Amazing Race the Emmy ended in 2010, when Top Chef cooked up a surprise win. American Idol has historically screwed itself by submitting performance episodes instead of those emphasizing competition. "It is a reality competition," says Shaffner. "But for a lot of people, it's just a talent show." The Winner Idol. If not now, when? The Fox ratings champ bounced back from a bad 2010 season with a golden one. And let's face it: It has to make Emmy hay before The Voice has time to outshine it. Emmy Awards Mad Men Modern Family American Idol Emmys 2011

Guillermo del Toro confirms Orphanage remake will be different

Guillermo del Toro says the US remake of The Orphanage will be a different film to the Spanish horror he produced."Even when we produced the Spanish movie I had intended to remake it because we had a very different screenplay that, because of money and time, got turned into the movie you saw," del Toro told Fangoria.Even though the 2007 film by director Juan Antonio Bayona was a critical and commercial success, del Toro says the remake will have the funds to achieve the story's full onscreen potential."There was this other structure for the original script I wanted to try. So even before we shot the first film it was an economic decision, a pre-existing creative decision, to change it."Production could start soon as a director is already on board and actors are being considered."We have Mark Pellington attached as director - I'm a big fan of his The Mothman Prophecies and his video work - and we are out to actors, so we're hoping to get things going soon," del Toro added. At Sundance 2011 Pellington told Total Film the remake script was an improvement over the original."It's the same story but I felt like the script is better," he said.

Based on a play, the pic can't always escape a lingering air of theatricality -- particularly since much of the action takes place in a single interior -- yet it nevertheless makes a poignant, sometimes poetical impression. Exposure will be modest outside home territories, with quality tube sales likely. The film's most cinematic passages are at the start, as a series of sweeping aerial shots locate a bedraggled group being marched across the Austrian countryside. When a military pilot above absently tosses a gum wrapper out his window, it floats down to land beside one exhausted deportee, for whom its lingering scent now constitutes a rare luxury. A dazed, elderly captive hobbles off into a nearby field, and is casually shot dead by the bored young SS officer (Alexander Meile) in command. That leaves 19 still alive in the rapidly fading group. While the officer makes himself at home for an evening or two in the manse of local gentry, he has the prisoners locked in the barn of villager Stefan (Johannes Krisch), who's been surly, and wife Traudl (Ursula Strauss) grimly quiet, since their only son was killed in battle. Nevertheless, some residual empathy stirs in her when she realizes their unwanted guests are collapsing from lack of food and water. Despite orders not to interfere, she and bubbly young hireling Poldi (Franziska Singer) enter the barn with such provisions as they can scrounge up. Stunned by this simple kindness, operatic tenor Lou (Peter Vegh) -- still clad in the tatters of the stage costume he was wearing when arrested -- rashly proposes the prisoners stage an operetta as thanks to their hosts. Never mind that none of the others are professional performers, or that this grandiose notion never seems to encompass more than rehearsal of a single waltz tune; it's the thought that counts. Already on questionable ground with the Nazi-sympathizing townsmen for harboring Jews (albeit against his will), Stefan is at first enraged by his wife's actions. But after a few swigs from a hidden beer stash, he's in the mood to offer fine accompaniment on accordion to the prison band. Meanwhile, news ebbs through that Berlin has been captured, and the war may finally be coming to an end. But a cruelly sobering final twist is followed by a memorably stark single-shot epilogue (though one whose precise significance might escape some viewers). Scharang's directorial restraint wisely downplays the maudlin "Let's put on a show" uplift of the narrative by observing myriad small, everyday moments that take us outside the barn as often as possible. Well-acted pic is modestly scaled but nicely crafted in all departments.Camera (color), Jean-Claude Larrieu; editor, Alarich Lenz; music, Thomas Jarmer; production designer, Alexandra Maringer; costume designer, Margit Salzinger; sound (Dolby Digital), William Edouard Franck; re-recording mixer, Ralph Thiekkotter; assistant director, Fritz Noltmann; casting, Carmen Loley, Markus Schleinzer.
